About Portsmouth

Portsmouth has one of the greatest maritime heritages anywhere in the world, and is the only island city in the United Kingdom. The Historic Dockyard is home to the world-famous ships Mary Rose, HMS Victory, and HMS Warrior 1860, modern day naval battleships, the National Museum of the Royal Navy, and a ‘Hear My Story’ exhibition telling the untold stories of the men and women who helped make the Royal Navy what it has become since the First World War.

Portsmouth also has a strong literary heritage, laying claim to, among others, Charles Dickens and Sherlock Holmes (Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, who practiced medicine in the City and was the first goalkeeper of the precursor to Portsmouth FC, wrote the first two Sherlock Holmes stories while in Portsmouth). They are celebrated in the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum and the ‘Study in Sherlock’ exhibition at the Portsmouth Museum respectively.

Portsmouth also has a strong reputation for offering a premium shopping experience. Gunwharf Quays, in particular, is the South coasts leading designer shopping outlet and home to over 90 famous brands with up to 60% off all day, every day.
